Youth Policy
Children under the age
of 12 require adult supervision while at Thorbecke’s.
Lifeguards provide a measure of supervision in the pool,
but their primary purpose is to ensure the safety of all
patrons and not the special needs of small children.
Please follow these guidelines at the
Aquatic Center:
Children under the
age of 4 must be
accompanied in the water by a parent or guardian.
Children,
ages 4-5, who are able to walk
unassisted in the Junior Pool may use the pool
supervised by an adult (parent or guardian) who is
present on the deck but need not be in the water.
Children, age
8-11, may be dropped off at
the pool for OPEN SWIM (only), absent a parent or
guardian. Children 11 and under should not be dropped
off unattended for Lap/Rec Swims.

More Lap
Swimming Etiquette
Swimmers arriving at the pool
should:
1. Spend a few minutes observing the pace of swimmers
already in the pool.
2. Select a lane with swimmers that have a pace close to
your own.
3. Inform previous swimmers of your desire to join the
lane
4. Inform a single swimmer of your desired swim pattern:
circle/split
5. Inform two swimmers of the change to lane pattern:
circle/split
Swimmers should:
1. Observe and respect the pace and workout routines of
other swimmers
2. Stay constantly aware of other swimmers presence
3. Inform other swimmers of your intentions
4. Know common lap swimming etiquette
5. Apply common sense at all times
Swimmer Etiquette:
1. To “circle” swim, 1 or more swimmer should swim in a
counter clockwise pattern, swimming up on the right
side, and back on the left side.
2. To “split” a lane, swimmers should swim up and back,
with each swimmer staying his own side.
3. Slower swimmers should always let a faster swimmer
“swim through” by waiting at a wall until faster
swimmers pass them.
4. Faster swimmers should give slower swimmers as much
“running room” as possible before pushing off.
5. All swimmers should allow a swimmer with a faster
stroke to start first. A slow stroke would be breast
stroke, drills, kicking with a kick board
6. All swimmers who are resting or waiting at the wall
should stay far to one side of the lane.
7. Swimmers should not do “wide” strokes when sharing a
lane, ie, breast stroke, or elementary backstroke.
